INTERVIEW WITH THE ASSASSIN
Movies function to create illusory experiences in the viewer.
Interview with the Assassin was carefully crafted to make one feel as though one were having the experience of
"watching a documentary". I appreciated some of the technical aspects of how this
was accomplished. Trouble was, the filmmakers seemed to lose track of how well they had
accomplished this goal. At several places the movie
veers off into creating an experience of "watching an unfolding drama". I had trouble getting into
the "experience an unfolding drama" part because
the film did too good of a job of creating an "experience of watching a documentary". On the other
hand the "experience of watching a documentary" was doomed to failure because the "experience an unfolding
drama" kept intruding. Maybe if I had been in a different mood, these two concurrent experiences
could have melded into a single good movie, but to me it just felt disjointed.
I gave this movie a rating of 2 stars.
